An 8x32 LED matrix driven by Blynk over MQTT

Original

A Python host streams 60 FPS RGB frames over UDP to a W55MH32L board, which pushes them into a WS2812B matrix. Blynk on your phone picks the animation and sends scrolling text.

Most of the work is Python host code, board firmware and Blynk setup, which AI tools handle well, while the soldering and 5V power wiring for the matrix is hands-on.

Write a Python host that streams 60 FPS RGB frames over UDP to an microcontroller driving an 8x32 WS2812B LED matrix. Include animations (plasma, rainbow, waves, checker, solid), a 5x7 font horizontal text scroller, and NTP time sync for a digital clock. Subscribe to Blynk MQTT topics to switch animation, send text, and set speed and brightness.

Story

The IR receiver kept dying. Blocking OLED updates and UDP traffic threw off the timing on the receiver's signal pin, so the author gave up on IR and moved control to MQTT through Blynk's phone app.

The build splits the work. A Python host handles NTP time sync, animation math and user input, then streams raw 60 FPS RGB frames over UDP. A W55MH32L-EVB receives the 768-byte frame buffers over hardwired Ethernet and drives 256 WS2812B LEDs in an 8x32 flexible matrix. Blynk's virtual pins control animation, scrolling text, speed (0.2x to 3.0x) and brightness.

The clock trick is worth stealing. The host queries pool NTP servers for sub-second time, so the digital clock needs no RTC module. A MOSFET switches the matrix's 5V supply from a GPIO, and the write-up walks through the wiring and the Blynk template setup.
